KMC has a fully established livestock department that oversees procurement of raw materials (livestock and delivery of the same to the factory). KMC handles cattle, sheep and goats in its slaughterhouses. The department is manned by qualified professionals in livestock production, health and veterinary sciences with wide experience in the livestock production industry in Kenya. The department collaborates very closely with the department of veterinary services and livestock production in its daily operations. These two departments fall under the parent ministry of livestock development. • KMC buys livestock from disease free areas only with permission of the veterinary department, which is charged with the mandate of disease control in Kenya. • KMC buys livestock from individual livestock owners, traders, ranchers and organized livestock trading groups. • KMC pays on carcass weight basis commonly known as Hot Standard Carcass Weight (HSCW) • When certain prime grades are required, live weight mode of purchase can be considered Procedure of supplying livestock to KMC is as follows a) Obtain an order form from KMC livestock office. b) Obtain a letter of o objection from the KMC veterinary officer. c) All animals should be free from trans-boundary diseases. d) All animals must be clinically checked by the vets before loading for foot and mouth disease and the other mucosal diseases. e) All livestock must move with a valid movement permit issued by the District Veterinary Officer from where the livestock are coming from (origin). f) All livestock must be moved by lorry/truck to destination. g) All movement must be between 6am - 6pm. h) All deliveries of livestock to KMC must be on order and agreed schedule between the owners and KMC Livestock Manager. i) The minimum delivery quantity is 10 head of cattle (canter load) or equivalent canter load for sheep/goats. j) KMC cannot receive livestock on hoof due to quarantine veterinary regulations. k) Animals must be healthy and treated at least 30 days before transit. l) On arrival, the veterinary officer KMC will examine the animals before off loading. Any one suspect in a load will lead to the entire load being rejected and under no circumstances will off loading be done. KMC has the following meat grades - prime, choice, FAQ, standard and commercial. Goats and sheep are not subject to grading conditions. Procurement prices as at September 2008 standards as follows: · Prime -220/= per kg · Choice-210/= per kg FAQ- Above 150kg-200/= per kg Below 150kg-195per kg STD A · A above 140kg-175/=per kg · A below 140kg-170/=per kg · A between 110-90kg-160/=per kg STD B · STD B -100/=Per kg · Commercial -95/=per kg · Manufactureure-78/=per kg Small stock -Goat s–185/=per kg v Merino/Dorper -Above 13kg-200/=per kg -Below 13kg-190/=per kg v Black head Persian 180/=per kg v Local breed 180/=per kg Note: KMC urgently requires suppliers for heavy Merino/Dorper lamb for its domestic market weight = above 40kg dead weight and above. KMC price of lamb is for the dorper, merino and corricdale sheep only. Prices are competitive and market driven.
