KMC has a fully established Livestock Department that oversees procurement of raw materials (livestock) and delivery of the same to the factory. KMC handles cattle, sheep and goats in its abattoirs. The department is manned by qualified professionals in livestock production, health and veterinary sciences with wide experience in the livestock production industry in Kenya.
The Livestock Department collaborates very closely with the departments of Veterinary Services and Livestock Production in its daily operations. These two departments fall under the parent Ministry of Livestock Development.
KMC buys livestock from disease free areas only, with the permission of the Veterinary Services department, which is charged with the mandate of disease control in Kenya. KMC buys livestock from individual livestock owners, traders, ranchers and organized livestock trading groups. KMC pays on carcass weight basis commonly known as Hot Standard Carcass Weight (HSCW). When certain prime grades are required, live weight mode of purchase can be considered.
